A Level Certification
The Library Education Media program is designed to prepare professional educators to become P-12 Media Specialists. There are two ways to earn certification as Media Specialists at the “A” level—earning a Masters of Education with a specialization in Library Education media or adding certification on to a previously earned Masters in Education. During the course of their professional studies, candidates engage in courses that enrich their content area skills, assist in refining connections between the media center and the classroom, allow them to focus on administration of media services, and engage them in learning criteria for book selection. The required LEM courses provide candidates with opportunities in reflective thinking as they discuss topics and engage in creating materials that demonstrate they are decision-makers.
Candidates working towards a M.Ed. must complete 36 to 39 hours of course work including an internship of 300 clock hours. The internship consists of 100 hours in an elementary school library, 100 hours in a secondary school library, and 100 hours repeating either of the previous levels or in a public library that has a children and youth department. On site supervisors must be certified P-12 Media Specialists. School libraries must be in state accredited schools. Candidates working towards Certification only must complete18 to 39 hours of course work, depending upon courses previously taken for the Masters degree. An assigned advisor will determine the exact number of hours a Certification Only candidate needs. The required internship of 300 clock hours is described above. To remain in good standing candidates must maintain a 3.0 grade point average.
All candidates at the “A” level must take a comprehensive exam after completing course requirements.

AA Level Certification
There are two ways to earn certification as a Media Specialist at the AA level—earning an Education Specialist degree or Certification Only. The attached curriculum sheet (see table in previous section) lists the coursework required for both. The only difference between the Ed.S. and Certification Only at the “AA” level is that Ed.S. candidates complete a thesis, while certification only candidates complete a field study. (Listing of advisor approved electives for the Ed.S. Program)
Candidates for "AA" Level certification in P - 12 Library Education Media come from various school library settings-- rural, urban and suburban. The “AA” candidates represent diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. They bring to the course of study their expertise in the areas of collection development, curriculum support, technology integration, peer collaboration, media management and legal issues. During the course of their professional studies, candidates engage in courses that enrich their research skills, assist in refining curriculum connections between the media center and the classroom, allow them to focus attention on legal issues related to school media programs and foster growth in content areas. The required LEM courses engage candidates in reflective thinking as they discuss topics, engage in research and design materials that demonstrate they are decision-makers.
In lieu of an internship, “AA” level candidates are required to participate in field-based action research. Education Specialists must complete two semesters of thesis work the thesis must focus on a topic that promotes action in the area of the P-12 media center. It is a formal process including permission from the University Office of Institutional Research, a thesis committee, and a thesis oral defense. Education Specialist candidates are required to maintain a grade-point average of 3.25 throughout their course of study. “Certification only” candidates also complete an individual field-based research project that must focus on action in the P-12 media center. While “certification only” candidates have a less formal review of their individual research, the requirements for writing have the same rigor. “Certification only” candidates must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 throughout their course work.
All candidates at the “AA” level must take a comprehensive exam after completing course requirements.
